The title of this series loosely refers to Rene Decartes' mind-body dualism. The "ghost in the machine" is British philosopher Gilbert Ryle's description of Decartes' idea. I expand Decartes' "mind" with the term "spirit". This work is concerned with psychological states. These states "reside" within the body (person) and so the states manifest themselves in and through us. This work attempts to give a visual manifestation of our various collective psychological states, our human-ness. As I have written in my general Artist Statement, I am interested in many things, many media. Film has always been a central influence. I am not a filmmaker.... I make static images. In this series I attempt to capture cinematic sensibilities within static images.... to illustrate psychological states, to tell "stories". Human stories..... while leaving enough "room" for viewers to super-impose and interpret for themselves based on their own experiences and "stories".
